With the launch of the new FontShop site in December, we decided to take the best writing from this, the FontFeed, and the Berlin-based FontShop blogs and combine them in a nice package integrated with the new site. That’s all currently rolling out at fontshop.com/news. We hope you love it. The best bits of this blog can be found in the archive of the new giant one whilst in the main news section you will find a variety of features and snippets spanning the world of type from Yves Peters, me, Sonja Knecht, Ferdinand Ulrich, and the FontShop Team. Buyer’s Guide: Mark Simonson Studio

Mark Simonson started out as a graphic designer and illustrator in 1976 working as an art director on a number of magazines and other publications. Simonson was head designer and art director for Minnesota Public Radio (1981-85) and an art director for its sister company, Rivertown Trading Company (1992-2000). During that time, he designed over 200 audio packages, including most of Garrison Keillor’s, along with several hundred products (t-shirts, mugs, rugs, watches, etc.) for the Wireless, Signals, and other mail order catalogs. Simonson frequently did lettering as part of design projects he worked on. This was always his favorite part, so in 2000 he began his own foundry specializing in lettering and typography. Simonson now has more than 100 fonts on the market with many more to come. Check out Proxima Nova, Refrigerator, and Mostra.

Basic EULA Rights

• Basic desktop license supports 5 workstations.
• You may take the font software to an external service provider such as a print bureau, as long as the font is reserved only for the licensee’s project and destroyed by the service provider once the work is complete.
• The font software may be embedded in documents, such as Adobe Acrobat (PDF), Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), or Flash movies (SWF).

Restrictions

• You cannot share the font with third parties.
• You cannot embed the font software into a website or application without an additional license.

Buyer’s Guide: Monokrom

Monokrom Type Foundry is an independent Norwegian type foundry established in 2012 by the type designers Frode Bo Helland and Sindre Bremnes, designing and marketing original type designs with a Nordic touch. Rooted firmly in the respect for typographic handicraft traditions, the foundry aims to build upon this foundation for a new era, developing and challenging established norms in order to create something new and lasting for today’s and tomorrow’s technology. Monokrom’s main focus is text faces, mostly avoiding the flashy ornamentation in favor of maximum legibility under different circumstances. Check out Telephon, Satyr, and Mønster.

Buyer’s Guide: Underware

Underware is a (typo)graphic design studio which specializes in designing and producing typefaces. These are published for retail sale or are custom designed. The company was founded in 1999 by Akiem Helmling, Bas Jacobs and Sami Kortemäki. Underware is based in Den Haag, Helsinki and Amsterdam. Check out Auto, Dolly and Bello.

MvB Fonts was started by type designer Mark van Bronkhorst in 1991. In between handling custom type projects for clients ranging from individuals to large corporations, this small foundry continues to develop and expand its range of font offerings. MvB’s Sweet Collection consists of engraved lettering styles from the 20th Century. Sweet is a registered trademark of Markanna Studios Inc.
